Mary McDonnell
Mary McDonnell, a two-time
Oscar(r),-nominated actress, is known for her portrayals on screen in
contemporary and historical roles. She also has a long list of roles on stage
and screen. Mary Eileen McDonnell was the daughter of John McDonnell (a computer
consultant) and Eileen (Mundy) is who is a Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania native.
Her birthplace was Ithaca, New York and graduated from Fredonia State
University of New York. After that, she went to drama school and was admitted
to the famous Long Wharf Theatre Company on the East Coast. A decade later she
scored her first major film role in Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves (1990)
as "Stands with a Fist", a white woman born to the Sioux Indians.
McDonnell received her first Academy Award nomination for the part. McDonnell
has appeared in the Lawrence Kasdan films Grand Canyon (1991), and Mumford
(1999) alongside such famous actors such as Robert Redford and Sidney Poitier.
She also played in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day (1996), featuring Will
Smith. Margin Call (2011) that was a duet with Kevin Spacey, earned McDonnell
the Robert Altman award at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards. On the small
screen, McDonnell starred in four seasons of Syfy Network's award-winning show
Battlestar Galactica (2004) in her critically acclaimed performance as
President Laura Roslin. McDonnell was awarded an Emmy nomination for her
frequent guest role in the TV series ER (1994). TNT's hit drama show Major
Crimes (2012) stars her as Captain Sharon Raydor. It is McDonnell's first
series and she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy(r). She was awarded an Best
Actress Academy Award(r) nomination as well as an Golden Globe nomination for
her performance as an actress with paraplegia in soap opera in John Sayles's
critically-acclaimed film, Passion Fish (1992).
